IN FINLAND, INTERNATIONAL NURSING STUDENTS FACE CHALLENGES IN THE LABOUR MARKET

In the Finnish Living Lab, one of the largest employers is the Wellbeing Services County of Central Ostrobothnia, known as ‘Soite’, which has about 4,000 employees. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) has been in discussions with Soite regarding its interest in participating in the Synclusive project. During these discussions, a specific challenge related to labour market inflow was identified: the employment of international nursing students does not proceed as smoothly as it should, even after they have received their certificates. To address this challenge and explore potential solutions in greater detail, a meeting was held on September 12th, 2024, involving representatives from FIOH, Soite, the City of Kokkola, Kpedu, and Centria. Kpedu is a vocational school, and Centria is a university of applied sciences; both institutions provide nursing education in the Kokkola region. It was decided to collaborate further on developing a training intervention for supervisors of Soite to enhance their ability to lead multicultural teams.
